It sounds like staph infection caused by an allergy. If it is itchy, you can sooth it with gold bond medicated powder.

He should be fine until the vet sees him.

Canine staph isn't contagious to humans.

Actually in my experience, schnauzers have more skin problems than poodles. I take care of many in the doggy day care/boarding kennel where I work. Four of the schnauzers get 'hot spots' and flea allergies. (but 3 of them are from a local breeder, so may just be a local thing)

I have been a poodle breeder, and have never met skin problems with them.
Reply:In others words. you have mutt. When will you people ever learn?
Reply:Leave it alone. Wait for the vet, you might make it worse by putting anything on it or fussing with it.
Reply:Check with your vet., but I will tell you one of the best shampoo / conditioner combination I've EVER used is Zymox. It is an enzyme based shampoo / conditioner which treats many types of skin ailments; both fungal or bacterial. I've always have great luck with it.

The best place (price and service) to purchase it is www.EntirelyPets.com

Good Luck
Reply:Sounds like it could be demadex aka: mange, your doing the right thing by taking him to the vet I would leave it be so the vet can see what your seeing now, putting stuff on it sometimes makes it harder to diagnose.
