Bathing your pups.....?

We completly understand that you cannot bathe your dog or puppy to often or you end up facing skin disorders and other health factors. But how much is to much? We have a pup who covers himself in his feces every night. He is a chow mix. We are trying everything possible to crate train him but until then we worry about him getting ill from his feces. So what do we do? We can't bathe him all of the time or he will get ill and we can't just leave his feces on him? My question is how often can you bathe your puppies or dogs and not make them ill? Is their any kind of shampoo out there that we could use so that we could bathe him more often and be safe about it. We have tried just daily water bathes but with his fur (Chow mix) it just does not get all the feces off. It barely even touches it. We have tried water and brushing but that just hurts him since his feces just cakes into his fur. Any web sites or personal experience would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you.

Bathing your pups.....?
You can start bathing puppies at 6 weeks of age, but they must be dried thoughly. If you have to wash more often than once a month, please use a very mild shampoo like baby shampoo with lanolin and blow dry thoroughly.
Reply:I don't understand how can a puppy get himself covered in poop every night. Does he have a diarrhea? If so, that problem must be addressed first. If he has normal hard poop, then there's no way it could get all over his body.

Also don't feed him canned food. Only dry food. Don't give him food or water after 6:30 pm. Take him out 15 minutes after his last meal, and once again before you're ready to put him back in his crate. Then you'll have to make the effort to wake up every 2-3 hours to take him out again to go potty.

If you don't want to wake up in the middle of the night, consider getting a cage that has a dropping tray, so when he poops, it drops to the tray, and he won't get it on himself. It is a bit harder for the dog to walk on the wires, but it will be fine as long as the wire spaces aren't too large for his feet. Put some towel in one corner for him to sleep. When he wants to poop or pee, he'll get up and walk away from the towel where he was sleeping. I got mine from a pet store near my house for only $50. It was collapsible, so it was really easy to transport and assemble.

RE: bathing your pup - once a day is too often. That will dry out his skin too much. Sounds like you're doing even more than that. I bathe my puppy only once a week. Sometimes a dog can go for 2 times a month.
Reply:You can hose the dog down without using soap everytime. Also using a mild shampoo helps. You can use an oatmeal based shampoo or even baby shampoo.
