How can I stop our Golden Retriever from chasing his tail and pulling hair out and eating it?

We have a 1yr old Golden Retriever. He has developed a bad habit of chasing his tail. Once he catches it he pulls out a mouthful of hair and eats it. He seems to be doing it purely for enjoyment and playing. I have looked at his tail closely and can not see any skin disorders. He only does this in 10 minute spirts about once a day when he is full of energy. Looking for a way to stop it. He has quite long hair on his tail. Should I trim it off?

You can trim the hair if it bothers you. My dog used to do that, but he outgrew the habit. If it's because of the excess energy, get him to play something else. Just distract him.
Reply:LOL He is just being a goofy puppy! I would get some photos of him doing it so you can embarass him when he's older. :-) He is doing it because it's fun. All too soon he will grow up and you will miss his crazy antics.
