What should I do??????

I think I have this type of obsessive compulsive disorder. Any ideas what I should do?
Your question caught my eye because my sister had 'trichotillomania' which is the same idea as 'dermatillomania' but it involves pulling out your hair as opposed to picking at skin. I'm not a medical expert or anything but I watched what my sister went through. It happened a few years ago when she was about 13/14 and we noticed that she was developing a small bald patch at the top of her head - it wasn't too noticeable but it was clear that she'd been pulling out her hair. It wasn't something she did all at once in a rage or anything...just a random strand of hair every so often, and she told me that she didn't even realise she was doing it at times. It went on for quite a while and we couldn't understand why she was doing it and it got her upset because she didn't really understand it either. My parents and myself really didn't know what to do because it seemed so unusual. We came across an article about it on the internet - so it was good to finally find out that it was an actual 'illness' and a form of an obsessive compulsive disorder. My mum took my sister to the doctor and had to show him the print out of the article because it was something he had never came across before. He just put it down to stress. OCD's like trichotillomania and dermatillomania tend to be caused by stress. My sister wasn't going through any major stresses as far as we were aware - other than some problems at school, but nothing too serious. I think it started off as a stress thing, but grew into a habit which she was unaware of doing.

You have the option of going to the doctor and speaking to them about it - they may ask if you want to speak to a councellor to try and overcome it and get help. You should ask yourself if there's anything that you're worried about or stressed about which could cause you to do it. Either way, its something that can be overcome - my sister no longer pulls out her hair and her hair has grown back in nicely. Whether you seek professional help or just speak to a close friend/family member who can help you talk through problems you have and find out why you are doing it. Hope this helps, good luck :)
Reply:Go talk to a professional, also I'm sure a anti anxiety medication would work wonders... I had a little ocd myself.. and medication helped me out alot. Good luck!
Reply:Wow....I may have the same thing, being that I pick at my lips a lot, and I do suffer from depression, anxiety, paranoia, and tension. I'm not sure what to do, other than mention it to your family doctor, and they can work with it from there. Thanks for the link.
