The fungi are more evolutionarily advanced forms of microorganisms, as compared to the prokaryotes (prions, viruses, bacteria). Fungi can be divided into two basic morphological forms, yeasts and hyphae. Yeasts are unicellular fungi which reproduce asexually by blastoconidia formation (budding) or fission.Hyphaeare multi-cellular fungi which reproduce asexually and/or sexually.

In general, humans have a high level of innate immunity to fungi and most of the infections they cause are mild and self-limiting. This resistance is due to:

Fatty acid content of the skin

pH of the skin, mucosal surfaces and body fluids

Epithelial turnover

Normal flora

Transferrin

Cilia of respiratory tract

Harmless fungi are always present on surface of the skin, and infection occurs when these organisms entry into the body These infections are usually superficial, affecting the skin, hair, and nails; examples include athlete’s foot, lock itch, and ringworm. However, in people with suppressed immune systems or who have been taking antibiotics long-term, the fungi may spread to deep within the body, causing more serious disease.

they're usually easy to treat becuase a fungus rarely spreads below the skin. If you get one of these infections, before you know it, you'll be saying bye-bye to fungi (say: fung-guy).

taking antibiotics can cause yeast infections
