What are the sores on my cats neck?

I have had my kitten for about 5 weeks now, she is a five month old spayed female, is current on her vaccines, and negative for Feline Leukemia. About a week ago she developed a sore on her neck where the hair fell off and exposed a scab. My vetrinarian thought it was from another cat biting her, but she has not been around any other cats since i have had her. She prescribed tritop twice a day. The scab fell off about a day later, and exposed raw skin. I took her back to the vet who thinks it is some sort of skin disorder but didnt tell me what. She gave her a steroid shot of some kind, and said for me to bring her back in 4 days. Tommorow is her appointment for recheck, and I have found another area develop just above the original spot. I can see redness and I feel a lump. Has anyone any idea what this might be? (also, her ringworm test wont be conclusive for ten days, but its been 4 days and there has been no growth so far)

What are the sores on my cats neck?
Maybe I'm paranoid after going through cancer with one cat and possibly two (the first one's mass wasn't biopsied to be sure) but an unexplained skin lesion and now a lump sound really scary; especially the lump.

A lot of things might explain the sore on the skin, but combined with a lump, I can't help but suspect some kind of cancer. I sure hope not!

Has kitty been vaccinated in the scruff area? I hope not about that, too...

I hope kitty's doctor will have more of an idea once all the test results are in. If not, you might want to ask for a biopsy of the lump or some bits from the skin lesion to be sent out to a pathology lab for a complete workup.

I hope this isn't cancer, or anything too serious...
Reply:I really think the sores may be ringworm. A blacklight can usually confirm ringworm... ask your vet about that. Ringworm often appears arounf the neck area. My cat had a bout of ringworm when he was young. The treatment was relatively simple and inexpensive. Hope that is all that's wrong with your kitty. :)
Reply:allergies? does it wear a collar, maybe it' the collar
Reply:Take them off of all fish products, even fish by- products in dry food. It is an allergy. No fish wet food, no fish in any treats, no fish flavor dry food.
Reply:Could be ringworm ( you mentioned testing for it), mange, flea dermatitis... some cats are allegic to flea bites... or a hot spot which you can treat with tea tree oil in small amounts......

the vet will tell you which way to go... but please do not use hartz products, especially for fleas.

to see the carnage they cause...

use frontline if your vet determines it to be flea dermatitis.

thanks for taking care of kitty!
