What is the prognosis for an elderly dog with lymphoma?

My 11 year old yellow lab's bloodwork came back indicating a growth in the liver, she has several skin lesions that are, so far, unexplained. they dont seem to be any kind of dermatological disorder and the vet feels that her bloodwork and skin lesions might be an indication of lymphoma. this dog has been my bestfriend for 11 years, and she's going in for an ultrasound on saturday. if she does have a malignant tumor in her liver, or even worse, lymphoma... how long might she have left? and what are the treatment options?

What is the prognosis for an elderly dog with lymphoma?
Generally if a dog has lymphoma they will have one or many enlarged lymph nodes. These are found under her ears and jawline, in the neck, under the arms, and the backs of her thighs. Usually a fine needle aspirate is done to find out if there is any indication of lymphoma or if it is simply infection. A biopsy- which is a slightly larger sample is sometimes needed as well. If your dogs bloodwork came back with elevated liver enzymes it can be an indication of several things- cancer being one of them. It can also be an infection of the liver or an indication that the liver is begining to fail. Liver infection can often be treated with antibiotics and sometimes I.V. fluids. Liver failure can be treated with a special diet and medications to help it work more efficiently. I have seen dogs go several years with a good quality of life in both of these cases. If it is a tumor an the liver- unfortunately there is not a whole lot that can be done. Some medications can help to improve her quality of life and make her confortable until the end. Some times antibiotics help to head off infection caused by the tumor. In the case of lymphoma- The dog is usually put on steroid therapy with prednisone- this can make them drink more water and act more hungry, and sometimes pant and pace some, but overall it greatly improves her longevity- it will also help greatly with any arthritis or allergies that she may have. Chemotherapy is also used at the same time- usually consisting of weekly or every other week injections and bloodwork- some oral chemo drugs are also used. This is a good way to prolong her life with out major side affects. Most dogs do not get sick from chemotherapy like people do and it doesn't really affect their day to day life much. Occasionally they will feel a little droopy if their blood cell counts get to low from the chemo and you will have to skip a week of treatment. I have seen dogs live up to 2 1/2 more years with a good quality of life on this treatment and others only 6 months. I am very sorry that you have to go through this with your friend, I recently lost my 10 year old golden retriever to a brain tumor and a close friends golden to lymphoma ( he went 2 years with chemo treatment befor he felt bad.) Good luck and I wish the best for both of you. Send me an update after your ultrasound results or if you have any more questions. I hope it turns out to be nothing serious.

Reply:Lymphosarcoma is a common cancer of lymphocytes in dogs and can occur in the lymph nodes, spleen, liver, and other organs. The cancer can be aggressive and if left untreated, can lead to a high mortality. Treatment with chemotherapy has been very successful adding months and occasionally years to the dog's life.

Lymphomas primarily affect middle age to older dogs. There does not appear to be a breed or sex predilection. Only 10% to 20% of dogs are clinically ill at presentation, the majority are brought in because of recently identified swellings or lumps.

While we understand how lymphomas form, we still do not understand why.

The symptoms of lymphoma are related to the location of the tumor(s). Tumors that develop in the lymph nodes often present as swellings with no other symptoms. The gastrointestinal form often is accompanied with vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, and lack of appetite. The mediastinal (chest) form often presents with shortness of breath and muffled heart sounds. The cutaneous (skin) form can present in several different ways including single or multiple lumps in the skin, or mouth. These bumps can itch or be red and ulcerated.

The treatment for lymphoma in the dog consists of chemotherapy. Lymphoma is considered a systemic disease, which makes surgery and radiation impractical and ineffective. There is a wide variety of chemotherapy protocols and drugs that are currently being used to treat lymphoma. The treatment usually consists of a combination of oral and injectable drugs given on a weekly basis. Some commonly used drugs include cyclophosphamide, vincristine, doxorubicin, and prednisone. The exact treatment protocol will vary depending on the practitioner. The University of Wisconsin protocol is one of the more popular ones used by veterinary oncologists. While most veterinarians can administer the treatment protocols. Some owners choose not to treat dogs that develop lymphoma. The life expectancy of these untreated dogs averages 4 to 6 weeks. Oral prednisone therapy may reduce the swellings and discomfort, but probably will not appreciably extend their life span. It must also be noted that oral prednisone treatment prior to chemotherapy is not recommended and may actually reduce the effectiveness of the chemotherapy.

In dogs that do undergo one of the recommended chemotherapy protocols, life expectancy can extend out to a year and occasionally longer. However, even dogs that receive appropriate chemotherapy usually do not live longer than a year. If a dog tolerates chemotherapy (most dogs do) their quality of life can be quite good during the treatment period. Treatment for lymphoma in the dog is considered one of the more successful cancer treatments and can often be performed by a local veterinarian without the need to travel long distances to veterinary schools or specialty clinics. I often remind clients that one year can be almost 10% of a dog's expected life span, so the remission rate and increased life expectancy with lymphoma treatment is often well worth it.

Reply:You should definitely join a Yahoo group for canine cancer (I am on the group for feline cancer). You will have contact there with many people going through what you are facing with your dog, support for the pain you are experiencing, what treatment options people have taken and how successful they have been, what the prognosis might be for her condition, etc.

Your vet of course will make you aware of all these issues and there is nothing like having the emotional support you need now from people who have "been there, done that".

I hope she can be helped and that you will have more quality time with her.
Reply:My heart goes out to you....I had a doberman that was diagnosed with lymphoma when she was only 2 years old, and she was just like a child to me......She too had skin lesions, hers were on her paws. The vet told me we could try chemo/radiation therapy but I couldn't imagine putting her through all the discomfort that comes along with such treatment AND he couldn't guarantee me that she would live longer than a year, at best. I chose to cherish what time we had left together. She had her ups and downs for about 6 months and then I decided that she wasn't happy anymore. She lost that happy, alert spark in her eyes, she began to swell up with water retention, and she wasn't as active, so I took my baby girl in and stayed with her while she went to sleep peacefully. That was almost 20 years ago and I'm still missing her, but I feel I did what was best for both of us. As for your girls' treatment options, or how long she has to live, I couldn't tell you as I am not a vet, but just be sure to ask questions, and listen to your vet's opinion, and then make your decisions from there. I wish you luck.

Do i have a problem?

so i was reading an article about onychophagia, which is compulsive skin-picking and nail-biting. it says that people who have this disorder usually have bleeding and infected fingertips and sores on their skin. while im not this extreme, i do pick at my lips a lot, especially when im stressed out, lots of times until i bleed. i do it all the time without even thinking about it and i get some sick satisfaction out of pulling pieces of dead skin off of my lips. my friends get grossed out if i try to start talking to them about it. can this be a mild form of the disorder or is it nothing? here's the link i saw it on: http://www.trich.org/articles/skin_picki...

Do i have a problem?
you only have a problem if you eat it too!

I have muscular dystrophy but i still get outdoors, and love to squirrel hunt, my question is sense i have?

Please delete or report the peckerheads...

If I were in your shoes I would not skin them in the normal fashion as it can be a bear. If you are not attempting to save the skin for any reason then here is how I would change my tactic.

-Instead of the "down the belly" cut, I would simply cut around the midriff.

-Basically, a circle cut around the middle of his body generally at the abdomen.

-Pull from the cut areas at the back and stretch the cut skin over the head and then the tail.

-Whatever is left holding on just cut it off.

Takes hardly any strength.

Best of luck my friend! Squirrel pot pie is the bestest in all the world.
Reply:I hope I don't sound like a dope, well I don't know much about skinning squirrels, but maybe you could have someone make ya a jig(like a fish scaler) with some vice grips and a lever, and I'm not trying to be a donkey, sorry i can't help ya more.... good hunting
Reply:Hello...sorry to hear about your disorder.I hunt and I find that if you skin them when thay are stil worm it is a lot easyer, the skin peals off like a wet sock. Hope this helps......
Reply:if ya could get it started and clamp down on the fur and something to clamp on the flesh and crank it up if it holds it'll pull the squirrel right out of the fur
Reply:Clip the front feet off with some heavy shears.Cut a one inch slit just under the tail above the anus.Step on the tail and pull up using the back legs. You could also use pliers to hold the back legs as you pull if your feeling to weak.Ithink its great that your still out there hunting considering your situation, keep it up!
Reply:I dont mean any disrespect to you but I hope you do not hunt alone, nor should anyone, but what I am getting at is have your hunting buddy do it for you. I hunt with two other guys. When we get back to camp we do assembly line. One makes the cuts, the next removes the skin, the last one guts it. Let your friend do the skinning and you can do the gutting. Everyone has their stong and weak points or likes and dislikes. I do the gutting.
Reply:My grand father had a peice of wood carved into a real narrow, deep "W". He had it nailed to a post behind the barn. He would hang thier feet, one in each bottom part of the W, and skin them by pull'n down on thier tails. Worked good for him when he got older. Could also make bout the same thing with two peices of 14ga. fence wire, put a loop at the end to hold each back foot.

Good luck!

Reply:I am sure you could work something out to easily skin them. My brother made two clamps, one out of catfish skinning pliers and the other a vise grip nailed to the cleaning stand.

Lock the vise grip onto the squirrels head which will secure him to the table. The catfish pliers are attached to a rope, hook up the pliers to the skin and pull the rope : )
Reply:Skin it right away, while it is still warm, soft and flexible. Get someone to help you hold it, or else stand on it's head.
Reply:Skin it like you would skin a rabbit, slice through the top of the back in the middle of its body, grasp with right %26amp; left hands under the cut area %26amp; pull while the animal is still warm %26amp; should not be a problem for you.* Cut all feet off %26amp; head before skinning.*

copy and paste. see if it works.

I'm not sure how easy it will be on your hands, but it's the easiest way I know.

I cant stand this anymore - WARNING LONG POST?

Hi Im a 17 year old female and have posted on here about suspected conditions before, I am always worried that I have a life threatening disease! Its seriously getting me down. I get the slightest symptom or I have an idea that I may have a certain disease and I look the symptoms up on the internet and within a few days I will have all the symptoms I have looked up or "think I do". At this moment in time I am having constant pelvic and lower back pain with some strange burping and frequent urination. All these are symptoms of ovarian cancer and of course I am convinced I have it, I went to the docs today and he felt my abdomen and back and told me to urinate into a sample tube to be sent for testing. He said that my abdomen and pelvis feel absolutley fine but I cannot get the idea of the cancer out of my mind. I have regular periods etc but I cannot help but look up symptoms even though I know in my mind that all the things I am experiencing could easily be something less and much more common eg a bladder or kidney infection. Last month it was a skin disease, the month before it was a neurological disorder, last year I remember going to see my GP about suspected breast cancer because I thought I had lumps and inverted nipples etc...then it was a brain tumor! Its getting beyond stupid now but I cant help but think I am right and I will die young of a dreadful disease.

I cant stand this anymore - WARNING LONG POST?
Sweet heart this sounds a lot like a mental condition known as Hypocondria. Its a major condition that costs this country a lot of money each year. You need to find a therapist. Your 17 now so You still have time. But, if you let this progress the way it has it will only get worse and before you know it, you won't be able to hold down a job or do anything for feeling like your sick and need to go to the doctor. There is usually something underlying in this fear. Its one of the control based paranoia's that often is triggered by major changes or a feeling as that you have little control over the things that happen in your life. It in a lot of ways is a lot like OCD. Get in touch with your local community counciling center. They should be able to help.
Reply:GO TO THE DOCTOR AND ASK HIM!!!
Reply:You are actually kinda CRAZY, sweetie!!!! You need to seek out a shrink. You are a hypochondriac with some other things thrown in!!!
Reply:So go see a SHRINK, moron!
Reply:If you continue, you certainly will die young - of worry and stress. Get out and enjoy yourself, see the countryside, visit old and infirm neighbours and help out. Make up your mind not to look up any more diseases on the Internet - no matter how badly you want to................
Reply:It is possible that you are right... what you think about most you often become.... But it is absolutely your choice what you think about. And it is your choice to change what you think about. It just takes practice. Think good thoughts, think healthy thoughts. Whenever you think about an illness, or a bad thought consciously replace it with a good thought. Affirmations are good. Say I am now healthy. or whatever feels good for you. Make an agreement with yourself to stay off of websites that give you symptoms of diseases, try this for 30days or even for just one week. And finally, seriously, you sound like a hypochondriac which is a sort of disease in itself, and you would probably do very well to find a counselor to talk with about it. Good luck, stay healthy!
Reply:Yea get your brain checked. If you're always worried about dying...you have problems..that's no way to live.
Reply:TAKE A PILL AND CALL ME IN THE MOORING
Reply:You need to see pysychraist sounds like you may be a hyprocide sorry don't know how to spell it. Anyways, this means that you constantlly think have something wrong with you and will even make things up. There's something off kilt.
Reply:I can't remember the name of it...oh yeah you are a paraplegic. No that's not it....you are one of those people who always thinks they're sick. I can't remember what it's called. I had a brain fart.......or....brain tumor???? You are a hypochondriac.

Just eat right, exercise and think positive thoughts. What is going on inside of your body reflects on the outside. Best of luck hon!!
Reply:You are not crazy or imagining things. You are a hypochondriac. If you feel that you have something you will convince your mind that you actually do have these things. It is treatable but you do need to go to the doctor and talk to him about getting you treatment.
Reply:possible you need mental help rather than medical. you sound like you have obsessive compulsive disorder. Not to further add to your worries but what you are doing to yourself is finding the slightest symptom you have, searching and searching for what it COULD be, then getting your mind into a state of frenzy thinking that just bcuz you have A symptom of a certain disease, then you automatically assume you have that disease. hate to burst your bubble but one single symptom can be symptoms for hundreds of ailments. you said yourself that once you saw what the othen symptoms of a certain ailment were, you then started having them later on. question i ask is if you never knew what those symptoms for that particular ailment were, would you have still felt them? brain plays a big part in our health and lack of it. stop worrying about crap you cannot control nor have any idea of. stop going to online WebMD's and places like that otherwise you'll suffocate yourself from all the worry. you feel sick, really sick like near death? then go to the doctor. stop fussing over every single little symptom you think you have. and everytime you check those online sites trying to figure out what you have, you slowly worry yourself to death.
Reply:Hold up, step back think. When did all this start? During the ages of 11-18 you are toxic with hormonal imbalances more often than not. If the peaks you are suffering were injected into a person older it would kill them or cause them serious harm. I know it's hard but try to chill out and find a friend to talk things over with. Talking helps.
Reply:This fear is ruining your life. I feel for you as it is a horrible feeling to have what you think you may be suffering from (all of the elements!)

Could you be in need of some mental health support, it sounds like maybe you have got yourself into such a state that this may have become an obsession. There is a disorder (that is manageable and treatable) called compulsive disorder. Not that i want to add to your list, but maybe you should speak to the doctor about your fears and see what he/she recommends. You cannot carry on like this. Also stop looking this up on the Internet as that is making you worse. if you eat healthy, exercise and treat your body well you are as fit and healthy as the rest of us.

Take care and get some support for this.
Reply:You're giving yourself psychosomatic symptoms. See a psychiatrist and ask about "Paxil." It has some negative side-effects, but they're better than continuing to have the symptoms which you're having right now.
Reply:Sorry, but youre a hypocondriac
Reply:hypochondriac-yes but you said you know its nothing..the more you stress the more symptoms youll have so the cycle will continue. stress kills people...think of that...check out these things....

Reply:You sound like you are catastrophizing every thing that you are experiencing. If you are constantly experiencing anxiety about something and it is causing you problems in your life then more then likely you are in need of some therapy. Therapy will help you sort through your fears and work through your anxieties.

If you keep saying to your self that something dreadful is going to happen to you or that you are going to die young, you will ultimately live that out. It is called a self fullfilled prophecy.

Talk to your parents, and go get some therapy. It will do you good.

Xeroderma pigmentsum?

Xeroderma pigmentsum is a very rare, inheritated disorder. Individuals who have this disorder may suffer from various pigmentation abnormalities and develop skin cancers very readily, particulary after exposure to sunlight. Can you suggest a biological explantion for the predisposition of these individuals to develop skin cancers so readily? (Developing hypotheses)

Xeroderma pigmentsum?
Pathophysiology: The basic defect in XP is in nucleotide excision repair (NER), leading to deficient repair of DNA damaged by UV radiation. This extensively studied process consists of the removal and the replacement of damaged DNA with new DNA. Two types of NER exist: global genome (GG-NER) and transcription coupled (TC-NER). The last decade has seen the cloning of the key elements of NER, and the process has been reconstituted in vitro.

Seven XP repair genes, XPA through XPG, have been identified. These genes play key roles in GG-NER and TC-NER. Both forms of NER include a damage-sensing phase, performed in GG-NER by the product of the XPC gene complexed to another factor. In addition, the XPA gene product has been reported to have an affinity for damaged DNA. Therefore, XPA likely plays a role in the damage-sensing phase as well.

Following detection of DNA damage, an open complex is formed. The XPG gene product is required for the open complex formation. The XPB and XPD gene products are part of a 9-subunit protein complex (TFIIH) that is also needed for the open complex formation. Subsequently, the damaged DNA is removed.

The XPG and XPF genes encode endonucleases; however, the XPF gene product functions as an endonuclease when complexed to another protein. The resulting gap is filled in with new DNA by the action of polymerases. An XP-variant has been described. The defect in this condition is not in NER but is instead in postreplication repair.

Seven complementation groups, XPA-XPG, corresponding to defects in the corresponding gene products of XPA-XPG genes, have been described. These entities occur with different frequencies (eg, XPA is relatively common, whereas XPE is fairly rare), and they differ with respect to disease severity (eg, XPG is severe, whereas XPF is mild) and clinical features. Cockayne syndrome can rarely occur with XPB, XPD, and XPG.

In addition to the defects in the repair genes, UV-B radiation also has immunosuppressive effects that may be involved in the pathogenesis of XP.

Although typical symptoms of immune deficiency, such as multiple infections, are not usually observed in patients with XP, several immunologic abnormalities have been described in the skin of patients with XP. Clinical studies of the skin of patients with XP indicate prominent depletion of Langerhans cells induced by UV radiation. Various other defects in cell-mediated immunity have been reported in XP.

These defects include impaired cutaneous responses to recall antigens, decreased circulating T-helper cells-to-suppressor cells ratio, impaired lymphocyte proliferative responses to mitogen, impaired production of interferon in lymphocytes, and reduced natural killer cell activity.

AP chemistry question...?
we all have cells in our body that will become cancer if they lose their inhibitors. Imagine the dormid cancer cell as a circle. The inhibitors are like rays of sunshine all around this circle. When the cell becomes dangerous, is when it loses these inhibitors(rays, like sun rays) around it. This allows the cell to attach to blood supply and reproduce itself...i,e. a cancerous growth. Any abnormality or disorder in pigmentation can cause this normally non-productive cell, that could cause skin cancer, to lose its inhibitors.....all hell could break loose then.

This is the opinion of a mad scientist.....

Do you think that maybe these people who think that they can sing but can't on AMERICAN IDOL .......???

all have a mental disorder??

kinda like people with anorexia who are skin and bones but still believe that they are fat.

these people actually believe that they can sing.
